About VAST

The Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) is incorporated in Virginia as a charitable, scientific, and educational organization, is an IRS 501 (c) 3 qualified organization, and is registered with the Virginia Department of Consumer Affairs. VAST was formed in 1952 with the mission of promoting excellence in science teaching and learning in Virginia. The organization continues to thrive with members from across the state. VAST is the Virginia state chapter of the National Science Teaching Association.

Mission

The Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) is a community of Science educators whose mission is to:

  • inspire students,
  • provide professional learning opportunities,
  • build partnerships,
  • advocate for excellence at the school, local, state and national level.

Member Services

Membership dues are $25.00 a year. As a member, you will receive:

  • Newsletters, The Science Educator
    • Each edition is full of information on such things as:
      • National science education news
      • State Department of Education happenings
      • News from VAST affiliated organizations
      • Innovative science teaching strategies
      • Grant information
      • Summer workshops and course opportunities
      • Award information and applications
  • Access to the Journal of Virginia Science Education
    • Teachers, teachers-to-be, school administrators, college science educators, informal science educators, and any others with experience in science education are invited to submit papers to be considered for publication in JVSE. The principal criterion for the acceptance of a manuscript will be that, in the opinion of the editors, it contributes to strengthening the teaching and learning of science. First published in November 2006, JVSE will become a permanent record of the growth of science teaching and learning in the Commonwealth. JVSE is available on the VAST.org website.
  • Access to the vast.org website and members-only content, social media, and electronic news blasts with current information and alerts on important events, grants, and competitions around the state and nation.
