Science Sleuths Source Evaluation Game: A Teacher and Learner Lesson Plan Liana Bayne-Lin & Kathryn E. Shenk
Abstract: The Science Sleuths Source Evaluation Escape Room game was designed by two Science and Math Librarians for 6-8th grade girls who attended James Madison University’s madiSTEM conference in March 2024. The goal of the game is to introduce students to SIFT & PICK—an information literacy source evaluation strategy. Students evaluate “Evidence Folders” filled with documents to uncover the best sources that support their research question. After evaluating the materials, students use a code builder and cipher to “escape the room” by unlocking a prize box. The game is adaptable and easily modified to various library settings and age groups, including primary and secondary schools, public library K-12 events, and academic libraries. The game asks students to engage with information sources to answer real world problems. This lesson plan includes the game’s directions, set-up instructions, printable items for gameplay, implementation and assessment strategies, and helpful insights into making this game work in any post-pandemic classroom
