Currently all 3rd grade teachers are required to give a performance based assessment and all teachers in Virginia are encouraged to give one performance based assessments during the 2016-2017 academic year. What are your concerns about implementing PBA’s in your classroom? What successes have you encountered? What advice do you give to your peers in designing and implementing PBAs? How has your instruction changed?
When we first implemented the 3rd grade PBA in my old district, we designed the PBA so that students completed a portfolio with product choices within each strand to put in the portfolio. We felt that student/teacher choice in the products was very important. We created rubrics to access each product for the portfolio. Although we made the choice to include each strand in the portfolio, districts and schools do have the choice to design blended assessments. In other words, one or two of the strands/reporting categories are assessed through the performance based assessments while other strands/reporting categories within the standards are assessed through more traditional style assessments. Just be sure that the PBA and the traditional assessments are aligned to the standards and are at an appropriate cognitive level as demonstrated in the curriculum framework!
